On Saturday night Beyoncé became the first woman of color to ever headline Coachella, the annual music and arts festival in Indio, California. The highly-anticipated two-hour performance became the most-viewed live music festival ever on YouTube, with 458,000 viewers tuning in. Her set received rave reviews and, in many ways, outdid the festival itself—leading many to refer to it as “Beychella” on various social media platforms.

Historically, the audience at The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has been a disproportionately white and privileged one. Beyoncé seized the opportunity to bring black history and culture to the main stage. Her set included a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as well as quotes from Malcom X.
